    Overview: Target Audience: This is an IV therapy education program for LPNs, an update program for RNs, APRNs, and other licensed clinicians allowed to administer IV therapy. Topics include: short peripheral IV catheter use vs. central line use for IV therapy, venous A&P, pH and osmolarity and effects on vasculature, common infusates, short peripheral IV and central line catheter flushing, site care, cap care, sterile fluid pathway, adverse effects related to IV therapy, signs of complications, identification of veins suitable for short peripheral IV catheter insertion, short peripheral IV catheter insertion procedure, complications of IV therapy, legal implications related to IV therapy, infusion modalities, central line care, starting and discontinuing an infusion, monitoring of the patient during an infusion, and removal of the short peripheral IV catheter.
     
    Requirements for successful completion include a score of 80% or more on the session-1 post test, and demonstration of skills taught during the session-2 hands-on skills workshop. The purpose of this session is to enable the learner to describe evidence-based I.V. infusion therapy practices. The overall Purpose of the Program (session 1 and 2): is to enable the learner to demonstrate knowledge of IV therapy administration and care via peripheral and central line venous access devices.

     

    Onsite Programs: We can provide an estimate for providing the online and/or the skills lab practicum portion of this program for health care facility groups. Health care facility groups that contract with us may have staff attend our online session-1, and follow that session with a hands-on in-house skills lab that meets organizational policy and procedures. We can provide our competency assessment forms by request to facilities (contracted with us as clients) to assist to run an in-house hands-on skills lab session.

    This continuing nursing education activity was approved by ANA-MAINE, an accredited approver by the American Nurses Credentialing Center's Commission on Accreditation.
